One Cayman Carnival

Today went to the annual adult street parade for Batabano / CayMAS in George Town. There were loud music, colorful costumes, people dancing in the streets, random strangers hyping each other up, drinks flowing everywhere! It was one of those events where you can just feel everyone letting loose and enjoying life for a day.

If youโ€™ve never experienced Caribbean carnival before, itโ€™s basically a huge cultural celebration rooted in music, freedom, history, and self-expression. Different islands celebrate it differently, but the common themes are soca music, elaborate costumes, dancing, and community. Carnival in the Caribbean has deep historical roots tied to emancipation and cultural identity, evolving over generations into the massive celebrations we see today.

What made this year interesting is that Caymanโ€™s two major carnival brands, Batabano and CayMAS, officially merged together under one umbrella called One Cayman Carnival.

Historically, Batabano is the older and more traditional Cayman carnival. It started back in the 1980s and was created to celebrate Caymanian culture and heritage. The name โ€œBatabanoโ€ itself comes from the old turtle tracks left in the sand by sea turtles. Over the years, it became known as Caymanโ€™s national carnival celebration.

CayMAS, on the other hand, came much later and had more of the modern Caribbean carnival style. It has bigger costumes, younger crowds, more of that Trinidad-inspired road march energy. It quickly became really popular, especially with people looking for a more high-energy carnival experience.

For a while, both existed separately, which honestly felt a bit divided at times because people would compare the two constantly. So seeing them come together this year as One Cayman Carnival actually felt pretty symbolic.

George Town was packed. Music was blasting from every corner. Every truck passing had a completely different vibe. One second youโ€™re hearing old-school soca, next minute itโ€™s dancehall, then suddenly everybody around you knows the exact same lyrics to a song youโ€™ve never heard before lol.

But honestly, I think the one who enjoyed it the most was my mom. It was her first time ever experiencing Caribbean carnival in person, and seeing her take everything in was actually really nice to watch. The music, the costumes, the and the whole atmosphere!

Thereโ€™s also something really fun about seeing George Town transformed like that. Roads closed off, feathers everywhere, people dancing in the middle of the street like nobody has work on Monday. It reminds you that Cayman really does have its own culture and traditions beyond just being known as a financial center or tourist destination.

By the end of the day, we were exhausted, sweaty, overstimulated, slightly sunburntโ€ฆ but also happy. Definitely one for the memories! ๐ŸŽ‰

Ocho Rios Day 2: Mystic Mountain

We woke up to a stunning view of Ocho Rios beachโ€”clear skies, calm water, the kind of morning that makes you just pause and stare for a minute. We had breakfast at Almond Tree Restaurant, which sits right by the water. Naturally, we had to order ackee and saltfish with dumpling (because when in Jamaica, right?). The food was as good as the view. Quick Tips if Youโ€™re Planning to Visit Mystic Mountain: Originally, I wanted to pack the day with activities, but then I had a moment. Iโ€™m on vacation. Iโ€™m on an island. Why rush? As someone used to time-sensitive work, itโ€™s surprisingly hard to not plan everything by the hour. So instead of rushing, I took a nap at 11 a.m. (lol…

    Catching up

Hi everyone, I’m writing to you now as a means of catching up for last month. I know a lot has been happening around the world especially in my home country, which makes me appreciate how privileged and blessed I am to be living here where the pandemic has been handled pretty well. I hope you guys are holding on. Anyway, last month has been (and I can’t stress this enough) HECTIC, in multiple facets of my life. Work per se has been voluminous,  CFA reviews and networking, home renovations, and finally launching our own business! All of that happened simultaneously in March. You can say yes I have been productive, but I have also abandoned a lot of other things like this blog, and…

    Life lately

I have been back and forth to the hospital the past few days and I haven’t been feeling my best self lately. I’ve been to the emergency room twice and boy I tell you, how lonely it is to be in a hospital bed alone with all those beeping machines and people in pain all over the place. I even witnessed an ambulance coming in with person who just drowned and soaking wet. Anyway, I’m not sure if my condition is due to stress, home-sickness, or change in weather and fatty foods whatever – but don’t worry I am recovering. One thing I know for sure — medical bills are not a joke so everyone please don’t take your health for granted! and when I…

    Holidays 2022

Hi friends! Happy holidays to you and your families ๐Ÿ™‚ The past couple of days has been “ugh” for me. Well it’s the time of the year where you have a long holiday, then work 2.5 days in between, before the long holiday again. A lot of people were doing last minute Christmas shopping, including me. Can you believe I had to wait good 20mins in line just to have all my gifts wrapped? I should’ve just wrapped it myself! But meh, can’t bother.  We were dismissed early from work so I had to do all my other…

Five things you probably didn’t know about me

Happy Sunday everyone! Today I want you to get to know me a little bit better.
