One Cayman Carnival
Todat went to the annual adult street parade for Batabano / CayMAS in George Town. There were loud music, colorful costumes, people dancing in the streets, random strangers hyping each other up, drinks flowing everywhere! It was one of those events where you can just feel everyone letting loose and enjoying life for a day.
If youโve never experienced Caribbean carnival before, itโs basically a huge cultural celebration rooted in music, freedom, history, and self-expression. Different islands celebrate it differently, but the common themes are soca music, elaborate costumes, dancing, and community. Carnival in the Caribbean has deep historical roots tied to emancipation and cultural identity, evolving over generations into the massive celebrations we see today.
What made this year interesting is that Caymanโs two major carnival brands, Batabano and CayMAS, officially merged together under one umbrella called One Cayman Carnival.
Historically, Batabano is the older and more traditional Cayman carnival. It started back in the 1980s and was created to celebrate Caymanian culture and heritage. The name โBatabanoโ itself comes from the old turtle tracks left in the sand by sea turtles. Over the years, it became known as Caymanโs national carnival celebration.
CayMAS, on the other hand, came much later and had more of the modern Caribbean carnival style. It has bigger costumes, younger crowds, more of that Trinidad-inspired road march energy. It quickly became really popular, especially with people looking for a more high-energy carnival experience.
For a while, both existed separately, which honestly felt a bit divided at times because people would compare the two constantly. So seeing them come together this year as One Cayman Carnival actually felt pretty symbolic.
George Town was packed. Music was blasting from every corner. Every truck passing had a completely different vibe. One second youโre hearing old-school soca, next minute itโs dancehall, then suddenly everybody around you knows the exact same lyrics to a song youโve never heard before lol.
But honestly, I think the one who enjoyed it the most was my mom. It was her first time ever experiencing Caribbean carnival in person, and seeing her take everything in was actually really nice to watch. The music, the costumes, the and the whole atmosphere!
Thereโs also something really fun about seeing George Town transformed like that. Roads closed off, feathers everywhere, people dancing in the middle of the street like nobody has work on Monday. It reminds you that Cayman really does have its own culture and traditions beyond just being known as a financial center or tourist destination.
By the end of the day, we were exhausted, sweaty, overstimulated, slightly sunburntโฆ but also happy. Definitely one for the memories! ๐
