Ocho Rios Day 1: Fern Gully, Rio Cobre, Mahogany Beach

Ahh, where do I even begin?

Maybe with this: I think I have to come to terms with the fact that now that Iโ€™m older, I get tired so easily. Like, why does waking up early feel like a personal attack on my energy levels? ๐Ÿ˜‚

Anyway, we were up bright and early to pack and start the drive from Clarendon to Ocho Rios. If you didnโ€™t know, Ocho Rios is one of Jamaicaโ€™s most famous tourist spotsโ€”known for its waterfalls, lush greenery, and beach-meets-jungle vibe. Think tropical getaway, but with more culture and spice.

My brother-in-law suggested we take the Spanish Town bypass instead of the usual route because of the potholes (seriously, Jamaicaโ€™s roads can humble even the best shock absorbers!). And honestly? 10/10 recommend. If youโ€™re a first-timer like us, take the bypass. Itโ€™s such a scenic route that I caught myself whispering โ€œwowโ€ every few minutes.

Coming from the Philippines and the Cayman Islands, Iโ€™ve seen a lot of beaches and mountain viewsโ€”but this was a different kind of beauty. We passed the infamous Flat Bridgeโ€”yes, that narrow, no-rails bridge that crosses the Rio Cobre and has a bit of a reputation for being spooky and thrilling at the same time. The whole area is surrounded by forest so dense and green it almost looked untouchedโ€”like something out of a dream.

We also cruised along the Highway 2000, winding through majestic mountains that felt completely wild and uninhabited. Jamaica is seriously serving raw, natural beauty.

Just before reaching our hotel, we drove through the famous Fern Gullyโ€”a winding road carved out of an old riverbed, now lined with hundreds of fern species growing on both sides. Itโ€™s like driving through a living green tunnel. Absolutely magical.

We stumbled across a quirky little row of roadside stalls selling Jamaican crafts, wooden sculptures, andโ€ฆ voodoo dolls?? ๐Ÿ˜‚ I had to take a photo of this one sculpture in particularโ€”it made me do a double take. Letโ€™s just say it wasโ€ฆ well-endowed. Lol.

We arrived at Hibiscus Lodge Hotel right at 3 PM and honestly, it couldnโ€™t have been a better choice for our first wedding anniversary. The hotel is nestled on a cliffside right in the heart of Ocho Rios, with views that stretch across the Caribbean Sea. Itโ€™s quiet, charming, and feels like one of those places where time slows down.

Here’s a preview of our hotel.

We spent the rest of the afternoon by the pool, soaking in the sounds of nature, no to-do lists, no rushingโ€”just the two of us, finally in a moment where we could breathe.

Happy Anniversary, my one and only hubby. ๐Ÿ’—

Hereโ€™s to more slow mornings, scenic drives, and unexpected roadside wood carvings ๐Ÿ˜‚

Metro Manila Pride March and Festival

Hey everyone, how are you? Today, I’m going to take you to a trip down memory lane when I was still in Manila celebrating the 2017 Pride Parade. This was my first time attending such event and I must say I had so much fun. Iโ€™ve never been to a parade this colorful and diverse. There were fun games, merch booths, food stalls, and live performances from well-known personalities. Not to mention the music was booming for 12 hours straight, so there were no dull moments. For those who are not familiar with the Pride Parade, it is a celebration of diversity, inclusion, social and self acceptance, legal rights, and pride for our LGBTQ community. The venue was in front of Marikina city hall so security…

The office party I almost didnโ€™t go to

Last December 6, my workplace held our annual Christmas party at Ristorante Papagallo in West Bay. Luckily for me, itโ€™s close to where I live, and I wasnโ€™t part of the planning committee this year. No running around, no stressing about venues, and no last-minute logistics on my plate. A small but very appreciated win. Last yearโ€™s party was at the Kimpton, and while I donโ€™t think I was officially on the planning committee then either, I still worked closely with the team that handled all of that. So this year feltโ€ฆ lighter. I moved into my new role back in August, and so far itโ€™s been both exciting and challenging. Iโ€™m now working with the sales team, which means Iโ€™m learning the income-generating side…

    Wedding bells and concert thrills

Preparing for a wedding can be a lot of work, and it has certainly been no exception for me. Over the past few months, I have been planning the event on a granular level. It has been more exhausting than I anticipated, especially since the wedding will take place in the Philippines, and I am currently in Cayman. With so much to do and so little time, I put my Derivatives course on hold to ensure I had enough time to prepare for the big day. I want to ensure everything is in place for the wedding, and I can’t wait to see all my hard work come to fruition in a few weeks! Secondly, I have been watching a new reality TV show on…

Toronto Day 2: Royal Ontario Museum and Eaton Centre

Today’s itinerary is more relaxed than Day 1. I had initially planned for a busy day, but we decided to take it easy. As usual, we ordered Jollibee for breakfast and headed straight to the first on our list — the Royal Ontario Museum. It is easy to commute here since the museum is just right as you exit the University Line – Museum Station. To get to the subway, we took a bus. It was raining and extra cold – but nothing could stop us! The Royal Ontario Museum is so huge. I can’t remember the last time I went to a museum, so I am amazed by their art collection. Apart from Canadian pieces, they also have European, Asian, Asia-Pacific, Middle Eastern, and…

    First time in Tokyo, Japan

This trip to Japan was so unexpected. Me, my husband, my mom, my uncle, and my auntie all ended up going together. Thereโ€™s been a lot of drama with my mom lately, and I just wanted to take her somewhere new, somewhere she could breathe for a bit. I also havenโ€™t seen my cousin in years, so I thought, why not visit her in Tokyo? Then I invited my uncle and auntie too, hoping we could all have a happy, peaceful vacation as a family. I only had three weeks of vacation left for the year. I already used one week in Jamaica back in May and another week in Manila, so this basically gives me one week in Japan and one week in Korea…

    Coping

Checking in today. This blog always lingers in the back of my mind, and even though I keep telling myself I’ll write something, I often donโ€™t. Is it that I’m getting older, or is it just that my energy drains faster these days? I promised I’d keep this space alive so I can one day look back and see how life wasโ€”even if itโ€™s the little things. Iโ€™ve said it before, but it still feels true: so much has been changing around me. Am I getting older faster than I thought? Lately, Iโ€™ve been struggling to manage my emotions and behavior. I havenโ€™t been great at recognizing what stresses me out, or how to stop taking everything so personally. And letโ€™s not even talk about…
