Discovering Los Angeles: How We Spent Our Layover Exploring Iconic Spots

As I mentioned in my previous post, we had a few days’ layover in LA on our way back to Cayman from the Philippines. I ensured we made the best of our short trip, so I booked a full-day tour from A Day in LA Tours. The trip was exhausting since the flight was 13 hours long, and immediately afterward, we went on a full-day tour. But to be honest, it was doable! We were able to visit Venice Beach, Santa Monica Pier, Beverly Hills, Farmer’s Market, the Hollywood sign (from the Griffith Observatory), and the Hollywood Walk of Fame! The tour was so comprehensive that we didn’t feel like we missed out on any popular attractions.

Santa Monica Pier

At the heart of Santa Monica Pier is a small amusement park called Pacific Park. Although it was closed when we arrived, we made the most of our visit by taking lots of pictures. The overcast and chilly weather added a unique, moody vibe.

Muscle & Venice Beach

Itโ€™s such a vibrant and eclectic place worth checking out if youโ€™re ever in the area. Picture this: a long, sandy beach with the Pacific Oceanโ€™s waves crashing in the background. Itโ€™s always buzzing with activity.

The Venice Beach Boardwalk is a two-and-a-half-mile stretch filled with street performers, artists, and vendors selling souvenirs. There is this creative, bohemian vibe everywhere. Walking around, we can’t help but appreciate all the colorful murals and street art. Venice Beach is known for its artistic community, so there is always something new and interesting to see. The Venice Skate Park is also another highlight. Itโ€™s right by the beach and always has skaters showing off their tricks.

If you are into fitness, you will love Muscle Beach. It is an iconic outdoor gym where you can see bodybuilders working out. It is also a historical spot since legends like Arnold Schwarzenegger used to train there.

Beverly Hills

As soon as we set foot in Beverly Hills, we were greeted by perfectly manicured lawns that scream sophistication. This city reverberates opulence, but it also has a surprisingly welcoming vibe. Itโ€™s not just a place for the rich and famous; itโ€™s a destination where everyone can feel like a star!

Farmer’s Market (lunch)

This is not your typical farmerโ€™s market with fresh produce and local goods. It has plenty of high-end stores and some pretty expensive restaurants. It is more like a bustling marketplace with a mix of everything.

We also strolled around The Grove and ate at Alma, a Mexican restaurant. The food and atmosphere was good. It has its own charm and is a great spot to spend a few hours.

Griffith Observatory (peak into the Hollywood sign)

We finally got to see the ever-so-famous Hollywood Sign. I have to admit, it was a bit underwhelming at first. We always see it in movies, so we think it will be huge and jaw-dropping, but it is far away from where we were, and there is no real way to get close to it without a bit of a hike.

Hollywood Walk of Fame

Seeing the Hollywood Walk of Fame was a bit underwhelming. It always looks glamorous in movies and on TV, but in real life, itโ€™s not quite like that. The sidewalks are crowded with people, and there are tons of vendors trying to sell you stuff, making it a bit chaotic.

Despite that, it was still a great experience. Walking along and spotting the stars of your favorite celebrities is pretty exciting, even if the surroundings arenโ€™t as glitzy as youโ€™d expect. One of the highlights was seeing the Dolby Theatre, where the Oscars are held. Standing in front of a place where so many iconic moments have happened is pretty cool.

Madame Tussauds is also right there. Even though the Walk of Fame itself didnโ€™t live up to all the hype (at least for me), the area has so much more to offer and is definitely worth a visit.

By the end of our layover in LA, despite the exhaustion from our long flight and full-day itinerary, we felt incredibly fulfilled. While some sights have lived up to our expectations, the overall experience was undeniably memorable. With all its contrasts and charm, LA definitely left a lasting impression on us.

    We got married!

I can’t believe it! I am now officially part of the married women club! Nothing much has changed, to be honest, given that my husband and I have been living like a married couple for a while now. But still, it’s nice to know that we’re now officially bound together for life.  We decided to get married in the Cayman Islands to avoid the tedious process of applying for a marriage license in the Philippines. We’ve been trying to sort out all the paperwork since January this year, but the back and forth of legal requirements took a lot of effort, time, and money. So, we decided to bypass all the red tape, get married locally, and do a destination wedding ceremony in the Philippines…

    Lazy Sunday

Today is just a normal rest day for me. I started the day off with a glass of water and a 60 minute yoga workout. Ever since I discovered yoga I have been so interested in it that I want to do it almost everyday. I just stayed at home the whole day, cooked ramen, took a nap for a little bit, and continued watching Crash Landing On You. I live in the suburb part of the island so my view every morning is so peaceful and serene. I must say countryside is perfect for soul searching and meditation. If you haven’t tried yoga before I highly suggest you do. Especially if you are under a lot of stress and have trouble managing your mental…

    Batabano Carnival 2023

Yesterday my boyfriend and I decided to watch this year’s Batabano parade. It was actually a spur of the moment decision. Since we have gotten much older, we don’t really enjoy being out in the sun while walking and dancing anymore. I would say, the first time I watched Batabano, I was so mesmerised by the vibrant costumes and the overall representation of the Caribbean culture. However, like most things, my ‘utility’ with island-wide events have been ‘marginally diminishing’ quite quickly than I expected. In my opinion, Batabano Carnival has lost its spark post-pandemic. It’s either the pandemic took a toll on people, or CayMas (a privately organised carnival) has become more popular and overshadowed Batabano. As you might notice from my previous posts, I’ve…

    Catching up

Hi everyone, I’m writing to you now as a means of catching up for last month. I know a lot has been happening around the world especially in my home country, which makes me appreciate how privileged and blessed I am to be living here where the pandemic has been handled pretty well. I hope you guys are holding on. Anyway, last month has been (and I can’t stress this enough) HECTIC, in multiple facets of my life. Work per se has been voluminous,  CFA reviews and networking, home renovations, and finally launching our own business! All of that happened simultaneously in March. You can say yes I have been productive, but I have also abandoned a lot of other things like this blog, and…

Metro Manila Pride March and Festival

Hey everyone, how are you? Today, I’m going to take you to a trip down memory lane when I was still in Manila celebrating the 2017 Pride Parade. This was my first time attending such event and I must say I had so much fun. Iโ€™ve never been to a parade this colorful and diverse. There were fun games, merch booths, food stalls, and live performances from well-known personalities. Not to mention the music was booming for 12 hours straight, so there were no dull moments. For those who are not familiar with the Pride Parade, it is a celebration of diversity, inclusion, social and self acceptance, legal rights, and pride for our LGBTQ community. The venue was in front of Marikina city hall so security…

  • Saturday nights at Cotton Club

    Saturday nights at Cotton Club

“Is there anything else you do on Saturdays aside from clubbing?” Short answer is, no! In this small island there is not much of a variety of fun activities to do on weekends apart from beaching so yeah. This is what “Caymanian kids nowadays” do most of the time. What I like about the night life here is that girls wear literally whatever they want without being judged or bodyshamed. As a woman that is one of the most liberating feelings you could possbily feel. It also keeps my creative juices flowing esp on outfit ideas and accessorizing. In the photo above I was only wearing a gray sports bra and an office skirt – but it turned out not so bad! ___ Anywhere with…
