Yesterday my boyfriend and I decided to watch this year’s Batabano parade. It was actually a spur of the moment decision. Since we have gotten much older, we don’t really enjoy being out in the sun while walking and dancing anymore. I would say, the first time I watched Batabano, I was so mesmerised by the vibrant costumes and the overall representation of the Caribbean culture. However, like most things, my ‘utility’ with island-wide events have been ‘marginally diminishing’ quite quickly than I expected. In my opinion, Batabano Carnival has lost its spark post-pandemic. Hey everyone, how have you been? For me, I’ve been busy as usual with my revisions, work, and life in general. I have been under a lot of pressure lately so I decided to unwind this weekend by going to Red Sky at Night event. When I was still in the Philippines, I loved going to events like this especially those that involved arts and culture. Red Sky at Night showcases work of local artisans and also celebrates culture of residents who where originally from different parts of the world. There were live performances, music, food, arts and crafts, games and activities for children (and adults also!). Here are some of the snippets I took from the event.

The global health crisis has brought almost all nations into community quarantine, and here in Cayman, we are not an exemption. The government has recently mandated a lot of businesses to temporarily close due to the recent developments with the pandemic. As we speak, we have 9 active cases here on island, and the best measures the authority came up with are: Twenty-four (24) hour curfew (we literally panicked buy yesterday because no one is allowed to go out!), Island-wide lock down (airport is closed for passenger planes, only cargo is allowed), and To temporarily shut down non-essential business, causing a lot of employees to be laid off. And you guessed it right, I was laid off for two weeks with nothing much to do…

Last December 6, my workplace held our annual Christmas party at Ristorante Papagallo in West Bay. Luckily for me, it’s close to where I live, and I wasn’t part of the planning committee this year. No running around, no stressing about venues, and no last-minute logistics on my plate. A small but very appreciated win. Last year’s party was at the Kimpton, and while I don’t think I was officially on the planning committee then either, I still worked closely with the team that handled all of that. So this year felt… lighter. I moved into my new role back in August, and so far it’s been both exciting and challenging.
