The Pirates Week

Hello everyone, welcome to another Anywhere with Choi. Today I’m going to take you with me to The Pirates Week Festival 2019.

I’m not sure if we are going to have it this year, hopefully we do, but with all that’s going on around the world I doubt it. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and let’s appreciate Cayman Islands once more in this national festival.

What is Pirates Week?

It is a week long celebration of Cayman’s pirate folklore and culture. It is a ten fun filled days of music, street dances, competitions, games, food festivals of traditional dishes and drinks, a Pirate Pooch Parade, a childrenโ€™s fun day, teen dances, two glittering parades, sporting events for all ages, a pirate invasion and spectacular fireworks displays. The festivities are celebrated in all three islands and starts with Little Cayman. It happens during the first week of November.

At the main event, there will be a “role play” where pirates invade the island, and everyone is welcome to join as long as you have a costume. The locals call it “the landing”. I joined the boat cruise and landing last year.  The pirate ship will cruise around for an hour before formally landing at the George Town Harbour at 3pm. The pirates will then capture the Governor at the Cayman Islands Museum 2nd floor and ‘run amok’ before being cast off back to sea again, for another year.

Thousands of locals and tourists line in the streets to watch the whole event as it is the only one of its kind in the Caribbean.

The float parade that occurs after the pirate’s landing is one of the main events people look forward to. During the float parade, each districts have their own entry that best represents the theme. It is a competition and the best float and marching band dancing to Caribbean music has a prize. The main purpose of this is to spread awareness around a certain cause, and each year is different. Last years was about saving Cayman waters from pollution.

At night when the parade is over, the pirates start drinking and you can spot them walking in the streets. This view is not surprising at all!

If you are planning to visit Caribbean or Cayman Islands in particular, I suggest coming in May for the Batabano Festival or November for the Pirates Week. This way you would make the most out of your trip by not only enjoying the beach but also taking part in these amazing national events.

Toronto Day 6: Niagara Falls and Nathan Phillips Square

Save the best for the last! This day is my fiancรฉ’s 40th birthday. I decided to get a private tour of Niagra Falls instead of DIY-ing it myself. Niagara Falls is about 2 hours away from Toronto, and with this weather, it would have been a painful experience for us to do all the commute and transfers just to see the falls. I figured it was more convenient to just pay a little bit more for a private tour where all we have to do is relax while we are being driven around the area, and most importantly, we are being guided through the history of the place. Our first stop is Niagara On The Lake. It is often called “The Prettiest Town in Canada”…

Why do I feel like I’ve already lived through my 30s?

Sometimes it surprises me how I’m still in my twenties when I feel like I’ve already aged by so much the past few years. I don’t know if it is the hectic work/study schedule, or the sudden lifestyle change from buy whatever you want to responsibilities before happiness. I’ve never felt so adult (and so exhausted!) in my life. You probably hear me complain about this all the time lol.    My birthday is coming up and I don’t even have plans or anything. I originally wanted to go shop my heart out for cosmetics and skincare, but then again I still have a handful of unopened products I hoarded when I went to the Philippines last year. Even though I already have everything I ever asked…

  • My Holidays 2021

Hey everyone! I know it’s been a long time…. ์˜ค๋žœ๋งŒ์ด์—์š”. I tweaked my blog a little bit here and there, did you notice any changes? lol. I’m writing to you now here at the comfort of my home with a nice and warm cup of coffee. Ah, it’s a good life. Many of us fail to appreciate this, the beauty of the mundane. Anyway, I have a lot of catching up to do since my last update! The last 2 months of 2021. November, actually, is my favorite month. I love Halloween. I like dressing up in costumes and watching others dress up as well. This year, I suggested for a Halloween party in my workplace and it was granted about a week and a…

    CayMas among other things

I’m so terrible at keeping my blog active, na tru? A lot has been going on quite recently. Apart from still learning about my current role in my new workplace, I am also studying for 4 upcoming exams: CSC 1, CSC 2, CPH, and Options/Derivatives. I’ve mentioned this numerous times in the past and I know I sound like a broken record because that’s about the only thing I ever talk about! But really — I work from 8:30am-4:30pm, study on lunch breaks, attend study group session from 4:30PM to 7PM, every single day. I only have a window of time on Saturdays to sleep, do house chores, run some errands, date night with hubby-to-be, or watch netflix! Then on Sundays I go meet up…

    Crazy week, changes, small wins

This week has zipped by so fast that when I look back, I canโ€™t even remember doing anything worth mentioningโ€”seriously, what even happened? ๐Ÿ˜‚ Thereโ€™s been so much going on around me lately. I keep telling myself not to let it get to me, but I think my body might be a better judge of that. I donโ€™t feel stressed out, but somehow itโ€™s showing up physically anyway. Work has been a bit of a madhouse recently. With two of my colleagues off on vacation, itโ€™s just been me and another coworker holding down the fort. Those two weeks were intense, but we made it through. And just when I thought things might ease up, my best friend at work decided to quit. Sheโ€™s putting…

  • Coming back home

    Coming back home

The first stop in our four-country, three-week vacation was the Philippines. We wanted to spend time with family and do some shopping before heading to our next destination. With some recent life changes, I know I might not be able to visit home as often, so I wanted to make the most of this trip. It was raining when we landed. A typhoon had just hit, so the weather was pretty gloomy and wet. That same day, the news was full of stories about a huge rally on the infamous flood control project. It was on the radio, TV, and social media. The whole country was talking about it. Even with all that going on, I noticed how much the Philippines has changed. There were…
