Hurricane Season in Cayman: Staying Safe and Finding Solace in K-Dramas

The hurricane season has started. Last week, we received a national advisory that a category four hurricane named Beryl was headed our way. This caused a lot of anxiety on the island, with everyone rushing to stock up on groceries and board their windows with plywood. Some might say we were overreacting, but those people probably hadn’t experienced the devastation of Hurricane Ivan. Although I wasn’t there, I’ve heard stories from friends and even my husband, who experienced it firsthand. Since then, the locals have been more alert and take extra precautions during hurricane season. It’s always better to be prepared and have nothing happen than vice versa.

The government now requires new houses to be built according to specific guidelines to ensure they can withstand hurricanes. Luckily, our home was constructed after Hurricane Ivan, so it’s more “hurricane-ready” than older houses. Our windows are double-layered or hurricane-grade. I vividly remember the impact of Hurricane Grace, which terrified me. I thought our windows would break, but they held up. After that experience, I suggested to my husband that we board up our windows like our neighbors do. When we decided, plywood was already sold out across the island. Fortunately, one of our neighbors had a spare, so we borrowed some to protect our windows.

On a different note, since I returned to Cayman, I’ve been thinking about my career. At 30, I feel like I’m having a mid-life crisis. Life feels short, and I’m unsure whether I am on the right career path. Honestly, I don’t feel passionate about it. However, I’ve heard stories of people pursuing their passions yet ending up in entirely different careers to support their desired lifestyle. So I guess you can never really have it all, do you?

To cope, I’ve been on a social media cleanse, keeping only WhatsApp and Reddit on my phone โ€“ no Facebook, Messenger, Twitter, or Instagram. I’m trying to spend more quality time with myself. I started reading “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie, which was recommended on Reddit as a valuable resource for dealing with people, regardless of your career. I’m only on the 4th chapter, but it’s already provided insightful real-world examples. It’s a good read and could be helpful in any career.

Another thing that’s been keeping me occupied is watching K-dramas. I have been binge-watching Suspicious Partner. Since Mr. Queen, I’ve grown to love Shin Hye Sun, so I watched Angel’s Last Mission: Love, My Golden Life, Still 17, and Welcome to Samdal-ri! When I saw her chemistry with Ji Chang Wook, I became obsessed with him, too! Now I’m really into Suspicious Partner.

Sometimes, all it takes is to rekindle the love for the things you used to do when you were younger, like watching K-pop live shows and K-dramas to make you feel like yourself again!

Toronto Day 5: Black Friday and NBA Game

My co-worker Paula and I had planned to meet on Saturday, but we decided to change the schedule to Friday morning. We had no specific plans for the morning except for shopping for Black Friday. We headed to Vaughan Mills outlet mall early in the morning to avoid the long lines. However, I could only buy four items from Kate Spade because the crowds were insane and the lines were too long. At times, it seemed like it wasn’t worth the wait and that I should have just shopped online instead. I can understand buying in bulk for retail stores, but if you’re like us and only want to buy one or two items, it’s not worth the wait (unless you want something limited edition!)….

    Catching up

Hey! Just in case you are wondering, I’m doing okay. Yesterday I went out on a lunch with my nephew at a Vivo Restaurant in West Bay, five minutes away from my workplace. It’s my first time eating vegan and I must say it’s not that bad. It’s just costly lol. I’m starting to focus on holistic recovery for myself. I recently enrolled in Yoga classes (Yin and Vinyasa) and I’m trying to condition my mind to always have a positive outlook in life. I cut-off almost all my social media presence (except twitter and blogspot) and it is doing me good mentally so far. I have also engrossed myself over Crash Landing On You, you guys should watch it too! It’s a K-drama with…

Why do I feel like I’ve already lived through my 30s?

Sometimes it surprises me how I’m still in my twenties when I feel like I’ve already aged by so much the past few years. I don’t know if it is the hectic work/study schedule, or the sudden lifestyle change from buy whatever you want to responsibilities before happiness. I’ve never felt so adult (and so exhausted!) in my life. You probably hear me complain about this all the time lol.    My birthday is coming up and I don’t even have plans or anything. I originally wanted to go shop my heart out for cosmetics and skincare, but then again I still have a handful of unopened products I hoarded when I went to the Philippines last year. Even though I already have everything I ever asked…

    Coffee & Connect: Week 1

It’s Sunday. We made it through the week! So let me ask you something, how have you been? Well in my case, it’s a pretty normal week but a little more productive than the last one. Let me share my activities with you in bullets. Monday Went to work, nothing new except a ton of paperwork. Our business has been classified as “essential” so I spent some time to work in the office. Went home pretty early and played Mobile Legends with my friends. Watched Community on Netflix (already watched this when I was in college but it’s such a great sitcom I don’t mind rewatching it over and over again!) Started reading The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren. Thanks for the recommendation Anika! Tuesday Impulsively…

    Arguing with Zombies

Hi friends! How are you? I haven’t been able to update this blog as much as I wanted to, but it is not by choice! I have been swamped the past couple of weeks…๐Ÿ˜“ Indeed 2023 started with a bang! At work, we have a major issue that my team had to help resolve. When I say major, it is reportable to the ombudsman major! It has been very stressful and challenging trying to fix something that we did not create in the first place, much less totally avoidable! It is disappointing as well that the moment the risk was identified, the most plausible solution was ignored. Ironically, nobody want this escalated, yet they escalate the most little things on a daily basis. So politically motivated…

  • A Slow Sunday in Mandeville

    A Slow Sunday in Mandeville

Today was one of those slow-paced Sundays where we didnโ€™t really have a planโ€”we just drove around Mandeville with no particular destination in mind. Most of the shops were closed (as expected in the countryside on a Sunday), but that didnโ€™t stop us from exploring and soaking up the scenery. One of the most interesting places we passed by was what my husband calls the โ€œRed Lake.โ€ He told me that when he was a little boy, people believed the lake turned red because nearby factories used to dump chemical waste into it. ๐Ÿ˜ณ These days, itโ€™s no longer a lakeโ€”just a wide expanse of reddish dirt. According to one of the locals we spoke with, my husbandโ€™s story checks out. They said the dumping…
