Hurricane Season in Cayman: Staying Safe and Finding Solace in K-Dramas

The hurricane season has started. Last week, we received a national advisory that a category four hurricane named Beryl was headed our way. This caused a lot of anxiety on the island, with everyone rushing to stock up on groceries and board their windows with plywood. Some might say we were overreacting, but those people probably hadn’t experienced the devastation of Hurricane Ivan. Although I wasn’t there, I’ve heard stories from friends and even my husband, who experienced it firsthand. Since then, the locals have been more alert and take extra precautions during hurricane season. It’s always better to be prepared and have nothing happen than vice versa.

The government now requires new houses to be built according to specific guidelines to ensure they can withstand hurricanes. Luckily, our home was constructed after Hurricane Ivan, so it’s more “hurricane-ready” than older houses. Our windows are double-layered or hurricane-grade. I vividly remember the impact of Hurricane Grace, which terrified me. I thought our windows would break, but they held up. After that experience, I suggested to my husband that we board up our windows like our neighbors do. When we decided, plywood was already sold out across the island. Fortunately, one of our neighbors had a spare, so we borrowed some to protect our windows.

On a different note, since I returned to Cayman, I’ve been thinking about my career. At 30, I feel like I’m having a mid-life crisis. Life feels short, and I’m unsure whether I am on the right career path. Honestly, I don’t feel passionate about it. However, I’ve heard stories of people pursuing their passions yet ending up in entirely different careers to support their desired lifestyle. So I guess you can never really have it all, do you?

To cope, I’ve been on a social media cleanse, keeping only WhatsApp and Reddit on my phone โ€“ no Facebook, Messenger, Twitter, or Instagram. I’m trying to spend more quality time with myself. I started reading “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie, which was recommended on Reddit as a valuable resource for dealing with people, regardless of your career. I’m only on the 4th chapter, but it’s already provided insightful real-world examples. It’s a good read and could be helpful in any career.

Another thing that’s been keeping me occupied is watching K-dramas. I have been binge-watching Suspicious Partner. Since Mr. Queen, I’ve grown to love Shin Hye Sun, so I watched Angel’s Last Mission: Love, My Golden Life, Still 17, and Welcome to Samdal-ri! When I saw her chemistry with Ji Chang Wook, I became obsessed with him, too! Now I’m really into Suspicious Partner.

Sometimes, all it takes is to rekindle the love for the things you used to do when you were younger, like watching K-pop live shows and K-dramas to make you feel like yourself again!

    Walt Disney World

I went to Orlando Christmas last last year to do some shopping and went to Disney World while I’m there. My trip was only for three days and there was nothing much to do in such a short span of time. My goal really was just to spend some time away from the island and buy reasonably priced clothing among other things. I remember arriving on the 23rd of December and leaving on the 26th. I have come to realize that shopping in the USA at this time of the year, apart from Black Friday, is not a good idea — mainly because everywhere is packed with people and almost all stores are already empty! So in the end, I had barely bought anything lol…

Right where I once dreamed to be

Lately, Iโ€™ve been so caught up with work and this whole transition that my days feel like one long checklist. Head down, moving from one thing to the next, barely pausing to breathe. But today, something different happened. I stepped outside, took a moment, and for once actually looked up. And right there, under the same sky Iโ€™ve walked under for years, it hit me: Iโ€™m standing in the exact place I used to dream about. A few years ago, I remember passing by this building and quietly telling myself, โ€œOne day, I want to work there.โ€ Back then, it felt soโ€ฆ far away. Fast forward to now, here I am. In the middle of the grind, yes. Tired most days, definitely. But alsoโ€ฆ exactly…

Toronto Day 4: Winter Village at the Distillery District and St. Lawrence Market

I thought I was completely prepared for my trip. It was only on the third day that I realized I badly needed a moisturizer. I had no idea that the cold weather could dry my skin so badly! I noticed bumps on my skin and my lips began to crack. I quickly realized that it was because of the chilly, dry breeze. As someone who has never lived in a winter climate, I didn’t know this could happen. Fortunately, I was able to purchase Mugwort Essence and Cream from the brand “I’m From” at Sukoshi Mart in Eaton Centre. After using it for just one night, my skin felt hydrated and refreshed. I appreciated that it didn’t leave a sticky feeling like some other moisturizers…

    We got married!

I can’t believe it! I am now officially part of the married women club! Nothing much has changed, to be honest, given that my husband and I have been living like a married couple for a while now. But still, it’s nice to know that we’re now officially bound together for life.  We decided to get married in the Cayman Islands to avoid the tedious process of applying for a marriage license in the Philippines. We’ve been trying to sort out all the paperwork since January this year, but the back and forth of legal requirements took a lot of effort, time, and money. So, we decided to bypass all the red tape, get married locally, and do a destination wedding ceremony in the Philippines…

    Holidays 2022

Hi friends! Happy holidays to you and your families ๐Ÿ™‚ The past couple of days has been “ugh” for me. Well it’s the time of the year where you have a long holiday, then work 2.5 days in between, before the long holiday again. So that little break in the momentum ruins the spirit, and I feel like all my co-workers share the same sentiment. lol Christmas eve was sooooo busy. A lot of people were doing last minute Christmas shopping, including me. Can you believe I had to wait good 20mins in line just to have all my gifts wrapped? I should’ve just wrapped it myself! But meh, can’t bother.  We were dismissed early from work so I had to do all my other…

  • Batabano Carnival

    Batabano Carnival

Since it’s almost carnival season (but has been postponed until further notice), I will take you to trip down memory lane with me in last years celebration! Batabano Carnival  is an annual festival held in the Cayman Islands every month of May. The island is home to more than a hundred nationalities, most (if not all) of which participate in light of community spirit. It is a cultural celebration filled with music, dance, food, costumes, heritage and culture, and ofcourse booze! lol. It is a pretty young carnival that has only been going on for 30 years (thanks to Rotary Club!) The highlight of the festival is the street parade composed of masquerade bands and *drumroll please…..* exotic costumes! Last years parade started from the Seven…
