Island life is overrated

I was born in Metro Manila, and I moved to Grand Cayman about five years ago. At first I enjoyed going to the beach; it felt like an escape from the busy city life. Eventually, I realised that going to beach is a staple for the locals. It is the main weekend activity; there is very little to nothing else to do. I don’t enjoy it anymore as much as I did before.

Last weekend and Wednesday holiday gone, my boyfriend’s friend hosted a beach party. They brought barbecue grill, speakers, and dominos. I was just there sitting and watching them play dancehall music. The first hour was fun, the succeeding ones felt so dragging. Is it just me? I guess because I was not with my own set of friends and had nobody to talk to that’s why. I just instead sat by the shores and looked at the clouds. Is it weird that I went to the beach and watched the clouds instead of the waters? lol. The skies and the universe as a whole just fascinates me.

I guess living an island life isn’t always as glamorous as one thinks it is. It is difficult to shop here. Either what you need is expensive, or out of stock. You have to either order it online and have it shipped from overseas, or wait at least two weeks before any store will have it in stock. Say for example cosmetics. I love watching first impressions on youtube. When I come across something I want to try, let’s say Charlotte Tilbury or Nars, it is nowhere to be found on island. ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Also, in my first year as a resident, I felt like I already exhausted all fun activities on island. It is just so small. Everywhere you go, you will see someone you know or someone familiar. Some places remain the same over the years. I guess unlike the Philippines where you can decide to hop on a plane and go to Palawan on a long weekend, road trip to Baguio, or go on a cruise to Bataan, in here, the places you can go to over the long weekend are Miami or Fort Lauderdale. Cayman Brac is smaller than Grand Cayman so I’m not even considering that as an option lol. Everywhere else outside the US takes planning and long holidays.

Anyway, those are my personal thoughts. Other locals might think differently than I do. I love the islands though, it’s just that sometimes when you do something over and over again, it loses its spark.

Right where I once dreamed to be

Lately, Iโ€™ve been so caught up with work and this whole transition that my days feel like one long checklist. Head down, moving from one thing to the next, barely pausing to breathe. But today, something different happened. I stepped outside, took a moment, and for once actually looked up. And right there, under the same sky Iโ€™ve walked under for years, it hit me: Iโ€™m standing in the exact place I used to dream about. A few years ago, I remember passing by this building and quietly telling myself, โ€œOne day, I want to work there.โ€ Back then, it felt soโ€ฆ far away. Fast forward to now, here I am. In the middle of the grind, yes. Tired most days, definitely. But alsoโ€ฆ exactly…

    My pregnancy journey

Before getting pregnant, I imagined pregnancy would be a slow and predictable process. You find out, you watch your belly grow, you prepare the nursery, and then eventually the baby arrives. Thatโ€™s the version you see everywhere. My experience was different. I found out I was pregnant in early July. I remember staring at the test and just thinking, okayโ€ฆ this is real now. It felt exciting but also a little surreal. I didnโ€™t immediately feel like a โ€œmomโ€ yet. It felt more like I was stepping into something completely new and unknown. The first big moment for me was hearing the heartbeat. Up until that point, pregnancy still felt abstract. But hearing that tiny heartbeat made it real. There was actually a little person…

  • Discover Camana Bay

    Discover Camana Bay

As mentioned in my previous blog post, I recently got a job at my dream company, a Swiss bank. It is located at one of Grand Cayman’s hot spots for tourists, Camana Bay. I remember my first visit there as a tourist, it almost felt like I’m back in Bonifacio Global City. The location is very aesthetic and it houses almost every essential establishment you could think of. There is a bookstore, numerous restaurants and cafe’s, clinics, cinema for leisure, mini gardens for picnic, and ofcourse the Fosters (the grocery store) is just a few steps away.  Definitely, having your workplace there is such a privilege. The entire location has state of the art facilities especially the security and data centre. Most companies there are wealth…

    First time in Tokyo, Japan

This trip to Japan was so unexpected. Me, my husband, my mom, my uncle, and my auntie all ended up going together. Thereโ€™s been a lot of drama with my mom lately, and I just wanted to take her somewhere new, somewhere she could breathe for a bit. I also havenโ€™t seen my cousin in years, so I thought, why not visit her in Tokyo? Then I invited my uncle and auntie too, hoping we could all have a happy, peaceful vacation as a family. I only had three weeks of vacation left for the year. I already used one week in Jamaica back in May and another week in Manila, so this basically gives me one week in Japan and one week in Korea…

Passing my exams and trip to Toronto

I am thrilled to announce that I have successfully completed my Canadian Securities Course and Conduct and Practices Handbook! It was an incredible journey. As part of my job, I have to process trades, so taking these courses was mandatory. It is a major milestone for my career, and I have gained so much knowledge. I am grateful for the support from my workplace in pursuing further education. It took me a total of six months to finish both courses. Although some people manage to complete everything in less time, I wanted to ensure I truly understood the concepts instead of just memorizing for the exams. And let me tell you, it was absolutely worth it! If you are planning to take the exams, here…

Journey to Self-Discovery: From Humble Beginnings to High Society

This post is dedicated to my dear friend Bea, who has consistently been my pillar of support and a trusted confidant whenever I’ve needed someone to turn to. Sometimes, I have this nagging feeling that I don’t fit in with the people I am surrounded with. I’m just a simple girl who once dreamed of being among the most intelligent and successful people in society. Sometimes, I feel like I’ve finally made it; other times, I wonder if I deserve to be here. There are moments when I feel like I’m trying too hard to fit in. I’m not sure if I’ve grown or if I’m just acting as the person I eventually want to become. I grew up in a modest background in the…
