Toronto Day 3: Casa Loma and The Cameron House

Today we are scheduled to visit Casa Loma, a historic castle known for its stunning architecture and beautiful gardens. It is located in Austin Terrace, and the closest subway station is Dupont on the University Line. As usual, from our Vrbo, we took a street car from King St to King Station. It takes about 5-10 minutes to walk from Dupont to Casa Loma. You won’t get lost as the castle’s towers are visible from afar. Casa Loma is included in the CityPass, so we didn’t have to queue when we arrived.

Casa Loma was built by Sir Henry Pellatt in the early 1900s. This historic castle is known for its unique Gothic Revival architecture and well-preserved interiors, providing a glimpse into the past. Inside, you can explore grand halls, discover hidden passages, and see rooms that showcase the lifestyle of the early 20th century. Casa Loma also offers great views of Toronto from its towers and has beautiful gardens to stroll through. It is also a popular filming location for movies, such as Harry Potter and X-Men.

Inside Casa Loma, you can explore several interesting areas and features:

  • The Great Hall: This grand entrance sets the tone with its soaring ceilings and opulent decor.
  • Sir Henry Pellatt’s Suite: Visit the lavishly decorated private quarters of the castle’s original owner, including his study, bedroom, and luxurious bathroom.
  • The Library: Home to a remarkable collection of books and period furnishings, the library is a cozy and historically significant room.
  • The Conservatory: This sunlit space is adorned with beautiful stained glass and exotic plants, providing a tranquil atmosphere.
  • The Secret Passageway: Discover a hidden passage that connects the conservatory to the Great Hall, adding an element of intrigue to your visit.
  • The Stables: Explore the stables, which have been converted into a charming exhibition space featuring vintage cars from the early 1900s.
  • The Sir Henry Pellatt Exhibit: Learn more about the life and achievements of Casa Loma’s builder through an informative exhibition.
  • The Tower: Climb to the top of the castle for panoramic views of Toronto, offering a unique perspective of the city.

There are audio and visual guides for tourists available at the reception.

Casa Loma is more than just a historic site; it’s a journey back in time that’s worth experiencing, whether you’re interested in history, architecture, or simply looking for a unique outing in Toronto.

Know more about Casa Loma here.

There is a cafeteria located on the basement level of Casa Loma. However, it closes early. According to travel websites, the BlueBlood Steakhouse is considered the best place to dine in the area. Since we were not too particular about food and wanted to save money, we decided to eat at PizzaNova instead. It is situated beside Tim Hortons, takes about 5 minutes to reach on foot from Casa Loma, and is on the way to the Dupont subway station.

We strolled along The Path through the Eaton Centre when we reached King Station. Before returning home, I found an event called Stand-Up Comedy & Improv Show @ The Cameron House on Eventbrite, which runs every Wednesday. How fortunate that it was Wednesday! We checked it out as it was our first time watching a live stand-up comedy show. We took a streetcar to Queen Street West, only a few minutes walk from Spadina Ave.

The show exceeded all our expectations! The performers were so good at Improv! Listen to the full show here and hear my voice at timestamp 7:33 and 7:36! Definitely recommend you go when you are in Toronto.

Right where I once dreamed to be

Lately, Iโ€™ve been so caught up with work and this whole transition that my days feel like one long checklist. Head down, moving from one thing to the next, barely pausing to breathe. But today, something different happened. I stepped outside, took a moment, and for once actually looked up. And right there, under the same sky Iโ€™ve walked under for years, it hit me: Iโ€™m standing in the exact place I used to dream about. A few years ago, I remember passing by this building and quietly telling myself, โ€œOne day, I want to work there.โ€ Back then, it felt soโ€ฆ far away. Fast forward to now, here I am. In the middle of the grind, yes. Tired most days, definitely. But alsoโ€ฆ exactly…

    Cayman Turtle Centre

Did you know that turtle meat is one of the national delicacies in Cayman? Where I’m from that would be bizarre to hear but interestingly enough it is not in this side of the world. The Cayman Turtle Centre is a conservation facility for turtles and also tourist spot here in West Bay. I’ve only been there once when I was 13 and never dared to go back until a couple of days ago. I got the urge to go visit due to a number of calls I receive from their Aviary department regarding problems with refrigeration. If you didn’t know yet, I work under a contractor for refrigeration so everytime the farm has some problems with their coolers, ACs, or fridge, I arrange for…

    Batabano Carnival

Since it’s almost carnival season (but has been postponed until further notice), I will take you to trip down memory lane with me in last years celebration! Batabano Carnival  is an annual festival held in the Cayman Islands every month of May. The island is home to more than a hundred nationalities, most (if not all) of which participate in light of community spirit. It is a cultural celebration filled with music, dance, food, costumes, heritage and culture, and ofcourse booze! lol. It is a pretty young carnival that has only been going on for 30 years (thanks to Rotary Club!) The highlight of the festival is the street parade composed of masquerade bands and *drumroll please…..* exotic costumes! Last years parade started from the Seven…

  • Quick update

    Quick update

Hey guys! How have you been? It’s been a while! *blows dust off this blog* I have been surprisingly busy the past few days especially with work. The economy is slowly getting back on its feet in this side of the world. In response to COVID-19 crisis, the Cayman Islands government has allowed residents, regardless of age, to withdraw at least 25% of their pensions. Guess what happened? Locals are shopping now more than ever and spending tons of their money on new stuff such as home renovations, appliances, air conditioning, and what not. As you may all know, I work at an air conditioning and appliance business so sales has been crazy like it’s the holiday season. Can you imagine, in some parts of…

  • My Holidays 2021

Hey everyone! I know it’s been a long time…. ์˜ค๋žœ๋งŒ์ด์—์š”. I tweaked my blog a little bit here and there, did you notice any changes? lol. I’m writing to you now here at the comfort of my home with a nice and warm cup of coffee. Ah, it’s a good life. Many of us fail to appreciate this, the beauty of the mundane. Anyway, I have a lot of catching up to do since my last update! The last 2 months of 2021. November, actually, is my favorite month. I love Halloween. I like dressing up in costumes and watching others dress up as well. This year, I suggested for a Halloween party in my workplace and it was granted about a week and a…

Day 2 in Japan: Shrines, Street Food, and a Very Random Karaoke Night

Okay, so itโ€™s officially our second day in Japan, and the pregnant lady is still exhausted. ๐Ÿ˜… But honestly, the day couldnโ€™t go to waste. We woke up early for breakfast and decided that instead of pushing ourselves all the way to Kyoto (which wouldโ€™ve been a whole production with our schedule), weโ€™d visit Nezu Shrine instead. Nezu Shrine is like a little Kyoto tucked inside Tokyo. Quiet, traditional, and surrounded by those iconic red torii gates. Itโ€™s one of the oldest shrines in the city, and itโ€™s dedicated to Inari, the deity of prosperity and good harvest. Japan has shrines everywhere because Shintoism is deeply woven into everyday life. People visit to give thanks, pray for good fortune, or simply reconnect with nature. At…
