The office party I almost didnโ€™t go to

Last December 6, my workplace held our annual Christmas party at Ristorante Papagallo in West Bay. Luckily for me, itโ€™s close to where I live, and I wasnโ€™t part of the planning committee this year. No running around, no stressing about venues, and no last-minute logistics on my plate. A small but very appreciated win.

Last yearโ€™s party was at the Kimpton, and while I donโ€™t think I was officially on the planning committee then either, I still worked closely with the team that handled all of that. So this year feltโ€ฆ lighter.

I moved into my new role back in August, and so far itโ€™s been both exciting and challenging. Iโ€™m now working with the sales team, which means Iโ€™m learning the income-generating side of the business. Iโ€™ll admit, I ask a lot of questions, but Iโ€™m genuinely grateful that my new bosses are patient, kind, and never make me feel stupid for asking. That alone makes a big difference.

Truthfully, I wasnโ€™t even supposed to go to this party. I had already declined the invite a month ago, mainly because Iโ€™m six months pregnant. You know how it goes: constant bathroom breaks, getting tired easily, walking slower than usual, and everything just feeling like it takes extra effort. But at the last minute, Lisa came up to me and told me not to worry about any of that and sheโ€™d be there to support me however I needed. I agreed almost immediately. A few days before the party, morale around the event had dipped because the organizers were understandably exhausted. There were a lot of last-minute changes and miscommunications, and you could just feel the exhaustion.

The theme this year was Back to 1920s. One of my coworkers joked that this was the third party heโ€™d seen that week with the same theme. His theory? Everyone probably used the same ChatGPT prompt. ๐Ÿคญ The organizers didnโ€™t even ask for opinions this year, which honestly made me think that whoever chose the theme already had an outfit (and a whole fantasy) planned in their head.

I also made a firm decision: I was not spending money for a one-night party ๐Ÿ’ขโ€ผ๏ธ

I refuse to spend on something Iโ€™ll wear once and forget about. And yes, I know, I have a reputation at the office for my questionable Amazon purchases, but this time I stood my ground.

I wore what I already had in my wardrobe, and just bought a church hat locally. And guess what? that hat cost me KYD $44. Forty-four dollars. For a hat. I swear, everything is ridiculously expensive these days. But that was my one and only splurge, and honestly, I think I did the theme justice. I was going for a wife of a mafia boss kind of vibe.

There werenโ€™t as many games as last year. We had the big bossโ€™ speech, the photobooth, and Christmas bingo… simple! Right after dessert, my husband and I dipped out. We truly ate and ran. ๐Ÿคซ

All in all, it was a good night. Nothing over the top, just good food, familiar faces, and a decent turnout. And at this stage of my life, thatโ€™s honestly more than enough. Sometimes, showing up is already enough.

Today we are scheduled to visit Casa Loma, a historic castle known for its stunning architecture and beautiful gardens. It is located in Austin Terrace, and the closest subway station is Dupont on the University Line. As usual, from our Vrbo, we took a street car from King St to King Station. It takes about 5-10 minutes to walk from Dupont to Casa Loma. You won’t get lost as the castle’s towers are visible from afar. Casa Loma is included in the CityPass, so we didn’t have to queue when we arrived. Casa Loma was built by Sir Henry Pellatt in the early 1900s. Today’s my birthday!๐Ÿฅณ

I’m spending it here in Jamaica with my husband, in his hometown. It’s a little extra special this year because tomorrow also happens to be our first wedding anniversary. Getting here was a bit hectic. I worked from 8:30AM until 3:30PM yesterday, rushed to the airport for our 5:30PM flight, landed and cleared immigration by 7:30PM, picked up the rental car, and then drove another 2.5 hours โ€” well, he drove not me lol It was my husband’s first time seeing his brother in a while, and his mom is also visiting at the same time (she’s based in the U.S.), so we ended up hanging out late. Around 1 AM, they surprised me with a birthday cake and sang happy birthday โ€” I wasn’t…

    Iโ€™m not an INFP anymore

When I first took the MBTI years ago, I came out as an INFP โ€” the idealist. And it fit. I was introspective, feelings-driven, and consistently journaling, constantly searching for meaning in everything. I could spend an entire afternoon reflecting on one moment โ€” a random goodbye, a line from a song, a scene from a film. I felt everything, all the time. It was a lot. And honestly? It still is. When my friend Bea left our workplace, I didnโ€™t just get sad โ€” I spiraled. I went into full-blown organize-and-buy-things mode to copeโ€”deep cleaning, impulse purchases, the whole nine yards. My emotions needed somewhere to go, and I gave them a productivity makeover. Then there was the time I watched Natalia Osipova perform…

    Life Update: Week 2

Hey everyone, how have you been? To be honest, my week was somehow mediocre. It is not necessarily unproductive, but it isn’t as productive as I would like it to be as well. Unlike most people, I physically go to work every other day, and when I’m not, I’m either doing house chores, groceries, or bank runs. I thought everything was okay, until yesterday. To my surprise, I had a really bad panic attack. I thought I stopped having those a long time ago? It has gotten worse from how it used to be before. I was just having my dinner, and the next thing I know I was crying over my food, catching my breath; my hands numb and shaking. I had no idea…

Hurricane Season in Cayman: Staying Safe and Finding Solace in K-Dramas

The hurricane season has started. Last week, we received a national advisory that a category four hurricane named Beryl was headed our way. This caused a lot of anxiety on the island, with everyone rushing to stock up on groceries and board their windows with plywood. Some might say we were overreacting, but those people probably hadn’t experienced the devastation of Hurricane Ivan. Although I wasn’t there, I’ve heard stories from friends and even my husband, who experienced it firsthand. Since then, the locals have been more alert and take extra precautions during hurricane season. It’s always better to be prepared and have nothing happen than vice versa. The government now requires new houses to be built according to specific guidelines to ensure they can…
